December 2024 Monthly Update

PRESIDENT’S UPDATE

We have come to the end of a successful 2024 for our Glen Eira U3A.  Our office volunteers deserve special mention for their efforts in keeping our organisation running smoothly.  Sincere thanks also to our numerous volunteer tutors whose generosity of spirit is the backbone of U3A.

November was an eventful month. The building of the ramp and handrails was completed and it offers those members who cannot navigate stairs or those in the art classes with trolleys with an alternative and safe entry to our venue. It is located via the memorial garden (to the right as you enter from the Woolworths car park). The timing was fortuitous.

We had an unfortunate incident when a car accidentally ploughed through the front fence and into the Memorial Garden. Thankfully no one was injured, including the driver, but the gate, fence, metal handrails and sump pump were damaged.  Access to the main entrance will be via the new ramp and adjacent steps until the handrails are repaired.

We also had a Gardening blitz. This saw our Volunteer Garden Group and other members who volunteered do an amazing job on the weeds in the garden, as well as fertilising and mulching. Thank you to all those who came to offer their time to improve our gardens.

As we look towards 2025 and the Summer months ahead, much of our state and indeed our country, has a greater chance of recording above maximum temperatures. There are some guidelines in the Health, Safety and Wellbeing section.

I look forward to seeing you in 2025 and I wish all our members and volunteers a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a Happy New Year.

Mark Rubinstein
President

HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELLBEING UPDATE – focus on summer wellness

As we get older, we often have a tougher time dealing with heat and humidity. The temperature inside or outside does not have to be high to put some at risk for a heat-related illness. Headache, confusion, dizziness, or nausea could be a sign of a heat-related illness.

To keep heat-related illnesses from becoming dangerous, remember to:

  • Get out of the sun and into a cool, ideally air-conditioned place.
  • Drink fluids but avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Shower, bathe, or sponge off with cool water.
  • Lie down and rest.

Go to the doctor or to an emergency room to find out if you need treatment.
