Monthly News – October 2023

Welcome to the October 2023 monthly newsletter.

Annual General Meeting

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be at 10.30 am on Thursday 19 October 2023 in the Green Rooms at our Glen Huntly campus and via Zoom.  This is a very important part of the operational side of running Glen Eira U3A and we hope that many of you will be able to attend. In addition to hearing how your fees have been used, you can expect a report on the past year and to vote for the membership and leaders of the Glen Eira U3A Committee.  Following the meeting, we have a guest speaker and then lunch and then Badgers’ Buskers to entertain everyone. We are looking forward to your company. If you plan on attending, for catering purposes, please RSVP if you have not already done so. If you are unable to attend, please consider appointing a proxy to vote on your behalf. A proxy form is available on the website or from Reception.

Winding Down

2023 has been a really busy and positive year as we have come back from the years of Covid interruptions.  With about seven weeks left of gathering together, I would like to urge everyone to enjoy the company of the friends you have made this year or the friendships which have continued on from past years.  Seeing everyone in their courses, engaged and cheerful, should remind all our members just what our U3A stands for.

Remember also those who volunteer their time and skills to staff the Reception desk, set up the rooms, answer your questions and help everyone.  They are all volunteer support people and deserve your greatest support, patience and kindness in your dealings with them. Let’s end the year on a high and show your gratitude and consideration in your dealings with this very hard working and wonderful group of members.

New Horizons – 4th issue for 2023

There was much positive comment about the last issue and the members who were presented there.  If you have a short story about your class, particularly if you have permission to share some photos, we would love to have this work to put in our quarterly newsletter.  You can submit contributions to the editor at or by leaving your work at the front desk. Cut-off date for items is the end of October. Please do not be tempted to make it a Halloween issue!

2024 Enrolments

Enrolments for 2024 courses will start at 9 am on Wednesday 17 January 2024.  As in previous years, we will provide assisted enrolments onsite at 1151 Glen Huntly Road for those members unable to do it themselves online or who require assistance with the enrolment process.

The membership fee for 2024 will be $70 and will be due no more than 7 days after first enrolling. If the membership fee is not paid within 7 days, any enrolments (including wait lists) will be cancelled, in order to make the course opportunities available to other members.

A 2024 Course Catalogue will be available later this month.  As in previous years, enrolments will initially be limited – this year to 4 courses (not more than one of which may be from each of the categories of Art, Dance, Exercise, Games and Languages). Limited enrolments will continue for one week until Wednesday 24 January, at which time additional enrolments will be possible, to include a total of 5 long (full year) courses (with no restriction as to categories) and as many short courses as the member wants.

Members Lunch

The next monthly members lunch will be held on Thursday 19 October, after our AGM. If you plan on attending, please RSVP so that we can ensure we have adequate catering. The final Members Lunch of the year will be on Friday 17 November.

Glen Huntly Road

Work to finalise the removal of the Glen Huntly Road and Neerim Road level crossings continues. Glen Huntly Road is fully open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic including the 67 tram, the stops for which are directly outside the re-built Glen Huntly station. The trains are running and lift access to the platforms is complete. Work continues on the station car park adjacent to / alongside our property. When complete, we hope our rear laneway leading to Glen Huntly Road, adjacent to the station car park, will be improved and rehabilitated as part of the work.
