Welcome to the September 2023 monthly newsletter.

Glen Huntly Road

Work to complete the removal of the Glen Huntly Road and Neerim Road level crossings continues. Glen Huntly Road is fully open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic including the 67 tram, the stops for which are directly outside the re-built Glen Huntly station. The trains are running again and lift access to the platforms is complete.

Courses – What’s New

We have a few places available in the following courses – take a look and enrol now!

23GAM26 – Bocce – self managed (weekly, Monday, 13.00-15.00 – starting 4 September) We are starting Bocce again at our Glen Eira U3A venue. Bocce is similar to bowls and boules and each team takes turns to roll or toss bocce balls towards a smaller ball called the boccino or pallino. The object is to bring your ball to rest nearest to the pallino.  Bocce balls and rules will be provided.

23GAM03A Learn to Play Lawn Bowls (short course, Thursday, 14.00-16.00 – starting 7 September to 26 October – held at the Elwood Bowls Club).

Come learn and enjoy what may be described as the ‘best game in the world’. An introduction to playing lawn bowls. Learn basic techniques and the rules of the game in a fun and flexible course. 

23GAM27 – Golf Croquet – come and learn (short course, Thursday, 11.00-13.00 – starting 5 October to 26 October – held at the Elsternwick Croquet Club).

Learn the exciting game of Golf Croquet, a classic lawn game that offers gentle exercise and strategic thinking. You will be given the opportunity to practise and play with others to improve your skills and understanding of the game. The fee is $40 (or donation) which INCLUDES “High Tea” luncheon.

23ART05 – Watercolour Painting – self-help (weekly, Tuesday, 13.00-15.30)

Do you have some experience with watercolour painting? Are you happy to work independently and share the joys of your experience with like-minded artists? 

Note: This is a Self-Help course, and it is only for those who are experienced and independent watercolourists. 

23ART12 – Creative Painting – self-help (weekly, Friday, 12.30-15.00)

This course is for people who would like to work independently to create original works, by focusing on composition, colour, tone, line, shape, etc. With the emphasis on fun, participants are encouraged to develop their own creative ideas and learn through practise and sharing ideas.

23ART14 – Pastel Drawing – self managed (fortnightly, Wednesday, 11.45-13.15)

Do you have some experience with pastel drawing? Are you happy to work independently and share the joys of your experience with like-minded artists? There will be no instruction or technique advice provided as this is a self-managed group who work independently and share ideas and inspire each other.

Remember: if you are not able to attend a class, you need to submit an apology for your absence. You can do so online at https://gleneirau3a.org.au/members. Submitting your absence yourself online, rather than emailing or calling, is much appreciated.

Planning Ahead

Thursday 19 October, 2023 will be a busy but exciting day.

  • Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held at 10.30. 
  • Our Thursday member lunch will follow the AGM and be held at 12.00-13.00
  • After lunch, the Badger’s Buskers will entertain from 13.00-14.00

Our Open Day, intended to allow prospective members to visit and see what we have to offer, is to be held on Thursday 26 October, 2023 at 12.30-15.30 during Glen Eira Seniors Month.

Enrolments for 2024 courses will be held in mid-January 2024. A 2024 Course Catalogue is expected to be available in October 2023.

More detailed information will be sent to all members over the coming months.

Members Lunch

The next monthly members lunch will be held on Wednesday 20 September at 12.00.

Although intended primarily for members attending class at the Glen Huntly campus on that day, all members are welcome to attend. The lunches provide an excellent opportunity to meet and socialise with your fellow members. We are holding these lunches once a month, on a different day of the week each month. In addition to Wednesday 20 September, we expect the future lunches to be held on Thursday 19 October (AGM day) and Friday 17 November.
